COLORBOND® has been a household name in Australia since 1966 and is one of the top choices when it comes to roofing. Colorbond steel not only provides you with a large range of appealing finishes to suit your home, but it also provides you with energy and environmental efficiency, fire protection, low maintenance, and warranties. Australia can face some severe weather conditions from heat and cold, to dust, rain, wind and hail. For this reason Colorbond steel is assessed at outdoor sites around Australia undergoing corrosion, durability, application, and exposure testing.
There is more to Colorbond than meets the eye, it is far more than just ‘paint on steel’. There’s actually FIVE layers:
- The steel base is manufactured to meet Australian Standards, ensuring strict adherence to the required grade and strength.
- The base is then coated in BlueScope’s industry leading metallic coating, to provide enhanced corrosion resistance.
- A thin pre-treatment layer is applied to optimise the adhesion o further coatings.
- A corrosion inhibitive primer is baked onto the surface.
- A topcoat of specially developed, exterior grade paint in a range of colours is baked on to provide resistance to chipping, flaking and blistering and to ensure the finish retains its look for longer.
Fifty years of Australian research and development has created a range of technologies that give genuine Colorbond steel its long lasting performance when subjected to some of the harshest Australian conditions. You can ensure you are getting the genuine article by looking out for the COLORBOND® steel branding on the product, or its packaging.
Choosing a colorbond roof is a great way to be energy efficient and ensure sustainability. It is strong and durable, meaning fewer issues and a long lifespan. Therefore, less energy and resources are consumed in maintenance and replacements. It also contains recycled content and is itself 100% recyclable. In some cases it can be reused without reprocessing, again saving on energy and resource use. It is a lightweight material which can mean a lower cost to transport to site and a lighter roof structure. And it is strong, which means it can help protect your home in stormy weather. Together, COLORBOND® steel’s beauty, strength and environmental performance combine to make it a responsible choice for your future, and the environment. You can reduce the cost of cooling your home by choosing one of colorbond’s steel range that qualify as solar reflective. These colours are:
But there’s another way that COLORBOND® steel can help make your home more energy efficient. Every colour (except Night Sky®) in the standard COLORBOND® steel range features Thermatech® solar reflectance technology. Thermatech® technology is designed to reflect more of the sun’s heat on hot days, which can mean less dependence on air-conditioning, plus reduced heat stress for your roof. This makes COLORBOND® steel a good choice for your home, your wallet and our planet.
Using colorbond steel for your roof provides you with fire protection. If you live, or are planning to build, renovate or live in a bushfire prone zone colorbond steel roofing, walling, gutters and downpipes are compliant for use, in even the most extreme bushfire zones. If you would like more information, there is a fact sheet for homeowners, builders and designers who are looking to build or re-build homes on BAL-FZ sites here (download “Fact Sheet: COLORBOND® steel clad roofing system construction, details for bushfire-prone AS3959-2009 BAL-FZ sites”
Maintenance for colorbond products is simple and minimal. It is recommended to wash the surfaces down at least every six months, more frequently if you live in a coastal area. Regular washing with clean, fresh water will not only prolong it’s life but also maintain it’s attractiveness for a longer period, thus protecting your asset. Luckily, in the case of roofing, this is done for us when it rains. Some areas such as the underside of gutters are not washed by the rainwater and will require some hosing down to maintain. It is also important to remove all debris, such as leaf matter, from the surfaces regularly.
Colorbond steel is produced and backed by one of Australia’s leading manufacturers, BlueScope. Depending on the application, location, instillation and variety of other factors, your roof may be under warranty for up to 36 years. Obtaining a warranty is a simple process that your roofer can guide you through and BlueScope’s team is available to respond to any queries or concerns you may have regarding your purchased product.
